Design and Features
Measuring about 13.5 by 4 by 15 inches (HWD), the P300 SFFis smaller than large towers like the Dell Precision T3610, our Editors' Choice for single-processor workstation PCs. Its dimensions are almost the same as the Lenovo ThinkStation E32 SFF. The chassis has a more streamlined look, with a flatter front panel than the Lenovo E32 SFF, but the ports and power button are otherwise in the same positions on both systems.
Sharp eyes will notice that the multicard reader on the Lenovo E32 has been whittled down to just the SD card slot in the P300. This makes sense since other digital media formats like CompactFlash and Memory Stick are slowly becoming obsolete. The front panel houses the aforementioned SD card slot, a DVD burner, a headphone jack, a microphone jack, and two USB 3.0 ports. On the back are audio ports (line-out, line-in, and mic), an Ethernet port, a Serial port, two USB 2.0 ports, and four USB 3.0 ports. There are a DisplayPort and a DVI port on the Quadro K600 graphics card, which let you connect two displays to the workstation and use them simultaneously.
There's 8GB of system memory and a 1TB, 7,200rpm SATA hard drive. This is perfectly sufficient for digital media and managerial users, but you can add more memory and install an additional 2.5-inch drive, like a solid-state drive (SSD) for speed. There are three free DIMM slots, one free PCI slot, one available PCIe x4 slot (physically x16), and one free PCIe x1 slot for future upgrades. The small-form-factor (SFF) chassis limits users to half-height expansion cards, which limits what kinds of graphics cards you can install in the system. The installed Quadro K600 is the top card that Lenovo offers. The P300 SFF comes with a three-year warranty on parts and labor.
The 3.5GHz Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3 processor and Nvidia Quadro K600 graphics cards are both entry-level models in their respective component lines. We haven't reviewed too many certified workstations using our updated tests, so we'll compare the results to high-end PCs we've reviewed recently.
The system's 3D scores aren't as high as those for the Asus M70AD-US003S, the HP Z1 G2, and the CyberPower Zeus Mini, on account of its entry-level Quadro K600 graphics card. The HP Z1 G2, with its Quadro K4100M GPU, performed significantly better on the tests (and is correspondingly more expensive), while the Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics cards in the Asus and Cyberpower systems are specifically designed for 3D gaming. The P300 SFF should be sufficient for 2D digital media and light to moderate 3D tasks, like pre-visualization graphics, but if you need to create mission critical 3D renderings in a short deadline environment, you'll need a PC with a more powerful workstation-class graphics card.
The Lenovo ThinkStation P300 SFF exceeds the needs of professional users for an inexpensive ISV-certified workstation. It matches the positioning and pricing of the previous Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkStation E32 SFF, with an incrementally upgraded processor. Since the ThinkStation E32 SFF is reaching the end of its availability, we find it fortuitous that the P300 SFF replaces it as our Editors' Choice for entry-level desktop workstations.
